Rules Of Fasting During Ramadan

Ramadan Kareem, the holy month of Muslims and the ninth month of the Islamic calendar is the month of fasting for the Muslims. Ramadan is supposed to be the month of Allah. Fasting is said to be one of the five pillars (duties) of Islam, which a Muslim should keep abreast.

Ramadan calls for fasting during the daytime, saying no to food, drink, smoking and sexual activities. The importance of rules of fasting during Ramadan is clearly known to the Muslims as it is said that:

He who fasts during Ramadan and follow Ramadan rules with faith and seeks his reward from Allah will accept his past sins forgiven; he who prays during the night in Ramadan with faith and seeks his reward from Allah will accept his past sins forgiven; and he who passes Lailat al Qadr in prayer with faith and seeks his reward from Allah will accept his past sins forgiven.

Actions That Invalidate Or Nullify The Fast

All scholars have concurred that the following acts will invalidate the fast. They are:

Intentional Eating or Drinking

If somebody eats or drinks due to forgetfulness, a misunderstanding, or compulsion, then his fast is yet valid and should continue to fast. If you choose to drink or eat, for whatever cause, then your fast will become invalid.

Intentional Vomiting

If one is overcome by the urge to throw up and vomits unintentionally, then he should continue to fast. If somebody chooses to vomit, for whatsoever cause, then his fast will become invalid.

Activities That Are Permissible During Fasting

On that point are close to activities that are allowed to do while fasting, which will not nullify the fast. Take for example the following:

Taking a shower

It is permissible to shower, for whatsoever reason, even if you are showering due to hunger or being overheated.

Washing the mouth and nose

It is permissible to rinse the mouth and nose without exaggeration; using too much water may induce you to swallow water, which may invalidate your fast.

Putting on eyeliner or eye drops

It is allowable to apply kohl (eyeliner) or eye drops or anything else to the eyes, yet if some taste of it finds its way to the pharynx.

Taking injections

It is also allowable to get injections for nutritional or medical purposes; there is no text that proves this invalidates the fast.

Taking suppositories

Likewise, it is permissible to receive an enema or douche. The injection of liquid into the rectum through the anus for cleansing, as a laxative, or for other therapeutic purposes, or the exercise of a suppository (a solid medication designed to fade within a body cavity) or any other medication that can be applied in the individual parts, whether in the front or back is permissible. In that location is no text that takes these acts to nullify the fast.

Accidental use of goods and services

You fast will not become invalid if you eat something that you could not protect you from. For example, swallowing your saliva or accidentally swallowing dust or sifted flour that has accidentally got in your mouth.

Tasting food with the tongue

Your fast will be valid even if you taste good with your spit or use toothpaste or mouthwash as long as nothing is taken back.

Kissing and embracing one’s spouse

It is permissible to kiss and embrace your spouse as long as one is able to master oneself.

Drawing Blood

It is also permissible to draw blood in any amount for any reason. If drawing blood weakens the soul, it will be considered a disliked action.

Being in a state of Janaabah

You fast will still be valid even if you encounter yourself in a state of Janaabah (a major ritual impurity) after Fajr (dawn) has come. Ghusl (a full bath) can, however, be executed once the time of Fajr has begun.
